The Delta Caucus would like to pay tribute to the late, great U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi, a powerful force in the US Senate for decades and a champion for the Delta. Sen. Cochran passed away on May 30, 2019. He spoke to the Delta Caucus on many occasions over the years (he is pictured above speaking to a Caucus event on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC) and his thoughtful, courteous and bipartisan leadership will be sorely missed.

We will move forward with doing the best conference we can by Zoom. Due to the pandemic, people who are sick or are at high risk and don’t want to travel, as well as some other illnesses, this was already going to be mostly by Zoom and we cancelled the Arkansas Capitol session weeks ago.

We have discussed why it would not make any sense at this point to convene in the expensive Clinton Library Great Hall when most people are tuning in by Zoom. We hope people understand this situation, but on the other hand we are an older, higher-risk group so it is not surprising. The trend has been overwhelmingly toward Zoom for quite a while now.

We first started organizing this conference in the late spring and early summer when most people thought the pandemic would be greatly reduced by Nov. 18-19. We doubt that many people thought it would continue to be this serious at this late date.

Nov. 18-19 will also likely be the flu season in addition to the Coronavirus, along with the start of cold weather.

Delta Caucus Director Lee Powell had some health concerns but is recovering well. We have had a number of other illnesses either from Covid or other problems.

Most people were going to take part by Zoom anyway. For the group hotel reservations at this point, we have Lee Powell and two other people.
